Silverback Engineering
2017-2020
Internationally-competing team of 12
dedicated to designing and building
fuel-efficient road vehicles.
Team Leader and Head of Engineering

Silverback Engineering competes yearly in the Shell Eco-Marathon Europe competition in London, the highest echelon of international hyper fuel-efficiency competitions. Being a part of the team over three years was a major learning experience and, crucially, developed my engineering passion and set my trajectory.

Over 10 months, the team of 10 designs and builds a ICE vehicle to compete in the Shell Eco-Marathon three-wheeled single-seater 'prototype' category against univerisities and select secondary institutions.

I was selected onto the team for the 2017-18 season as an engineer specialising in the electronic systems of the vehicle, and quickly took charge of design of the Gx35 engine's Electronic Control Unit (ECU) wiring harness and power supply. Subsequenly promoted to head of the electronics sub-team, I saw out the season driving several projects including a 3D-printed steering wheel with inbuilt data and communciation relay. I also oversaw major changes to the wiring structure and tuning of our Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) System.
I was promoted to Team Leader and Head of Engineering for the Silverback Engineering 2018-19 season. As Team Leader, I oversaw the Engineering and PR wings of the team - directing the car's development and overseeing the acquisition of funding to do so. Among the development this season were major changes to the vehicle chassis, redesigned boards for reliability, and the implementation of a more efficient engine assembly. Competing valiantly at the 2019 competition, plagued by challenges with our braking and drivetrain systems, we were shortlisted for the prestigious Shell 'Perseverance and Spirit of the Event' award.

Conversing with the Mayor of The Hague, Pauline Krikke, on the promotion of sustainable technologies through events showcasing our car was a privileged ending to my years on the team. Having had stepped back to an advisor role for my senior year of high school, my growth through the team has formed the cornerstone of my trajectory and passion for intelligent, sustainable design.
